Rooted heavily in jazz and bathed in a hip hop hue, I’ve literally spent hours immersed in the sounds of Richmond, Virginian multinstumentalist DJ Harrison‘s mindstretching ColorJazzMixtape, including this brilliant tip of the hat to Georgia Anne Muldrow. Niftily arranged and versatilely performed by Harrison’s trio, alias himself on drums, bass and keys, his music floods the mind’s dingy cellar, through clouds of smoke, drifting about in a pale light, holding a bottle of red wine and lingering in the smell of wood from the dense green forests inside and out.

This, my friends, is real.

And this, Georgia’s original.

So while Harrison seemingly spends all of his time cooking up some dope tunes in the basement, producing beats, instrumentals and all sorts of funkiness just waiting to be heard, we need to be on the receiving side of things. That’s just how it works.

There’s a ton of work up on his Bandcamp page, including the tracks I singled out below.

His Stashboxxx record on Jellowstone Records bears some dirty finds, alongside this beautiful tune:

So start digging or crip walk straight on out, why don’t you. Yes, Harrison will also do this to you.

Oh and by the way, DJ Harrison just opened for DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist on their current Renegades Of Rhythm Tour in Virginia. Just sayin’.
